At 75 years young, I've been able to successfully combine my 60-plus years' love of photography with my passion for "woodies", which is what old classic and antique wooden boats are affectionately called. I own two "woodies." a 1969 26 ft. Lyman Cruisette, which we purchased new in '69, and our recent addition of a 1951 Chris-Craft 17 ft. Special Runabout.
I've twice served as Commodore of my yacht club and also had the privilege of serving in that capacity for the Inter-Lake Yachting Association in 1982. As I'm known in the Northern Ohio/Lake Erie boating community as "Commodore Don" it seemed a logical choice of name for my current photographic endeavors.
I no longer shoot film. Since acquiring a new Nikon D1X in July 2001 and adding a D100 in 2002, my Nikon 35 mm body sits unused.
Since the first of March 2005, I've been the proud owner of a Nikon D2X, a fantastic piece of equipment. That has left me with the D1X as a backup.....two big, heavy cameras. Ever since giving my D100 to my granddaughter, I've missed not having a smaller, lighter camera with which to "travel light" with the body and the 18-200mm VR lens mounted on it. So, the minute I read the specs of the new D300 I ordered one. I've had the D300 since late October 2007. So, what's my impression of it? Well, I probably wouldn't want to drive nails with it, but as far as the pictures it takes and the features it has, in my opinion, it is a better camera than the D2X. I'm very impressed with it!
Now, in February 2009, I've added a D-700 full frame camera. With the 14-24 mm lens mounted on it, it sees an angle of view or 114 degrees. Also, the D700 is a superb high-ISO camera and is able to take pictures without flash in very low light levels. WOW! This high-ISO ability has allowed me to take action shots of moving boats with fast shutter speeds yet great depth of focus. This was never possible previously.

2 Nikon SB-800 flash units
One more matter. The pictures displayed are compressed with automatic software after I have uploaded my original full resolution versions. The originals, from which any prints will be made, have NO JPEG distortions or artifacts in them. On some of the pictures on this site, you will see some JPEG distortions. These are particularly noticeable in large areas of the same color (such as sky, for example), but I assure you these distortions will not be visible in any prints you may order. Prints will be made from the large, high quality six or twelve megapixel original picture files which are what I uploaded to Smugmug. Enjoy your visit!
